Syria has criticised the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), calling it a tool used by the US to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries under the guise of promoting democracy. In a statement released on Wednesday, the Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry condemned the West, led by the US, for using democratic ideals as a pretext for imposing their will on countries.
The Ministry accused NED, founded in 1983, of working to undermine governments, provoke division, and mislead public opinion, while operating under the false pretence of defending democracy. Syria has suffered from a prolonged conflict it claims was fueled by Western interference under the guise of democracy promotion, the statement added.
The Ministry further voiced support for a Chinese report that highlights NED’s alleged destructive practices worldwide, accusing the foundation of serving US political interests at the expense of global peace and stability.
Syria vowed to continue exposing what it described as the “subversive” activities of NED and warned other states of the dangers posed by the organisation.
