Chinese eVTOL manufacturer EHang has successfully conducted the first autonomous passenger flight in West Asia, using its EH216-S, the company announced on Monday. This flight marks a significant milestone as EHang expands its operations in the region.

Taking off in Abu Dhabi, the EH216-S, EHang’s flagship electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicle, is part of the company’s strategy to tap into the emerging “low-altitude” economy, which encompasses a variety of aerial vehicle operations below 1,000 metres.

“We will actively foster collaboration and communications between the General Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) to expedite the process,” stated Hu Huazhi, founder and CEO of EHang.

The demonstration flight was conducted at the Emirates Falcons Aviation Club in the presence of government officials, civil aviation authorities, and members of the Emirati royal families. This event is not just a technological triumph but also a precursor to the planned commercial operations of these pilotless aircraft in the UAE and other parts of West Asia.

Sky’s never the limit, and air mobility is closer than you think. Just 10 days after Abu Dhabi’s inaugural flight, the world’s first certified #EH216-S pilotless eVTOL proudly completed the UAE’s first-ever passenger-carrying air taxi flight in Al Ain.

Mohamed Al-Dhaheri, board member of EHang’s local strategic partner Multi Level Group, who also experienced a ride in the two-seat aircraft, expressed his enthusiasm about the project: “Being part of this historic moment is truly exhilarating. The seamless integration of technology and aviation represents a significant leap forward for our nation, and as an Emirati, I am proud to be a part of it.”

EHang, based in Guangzhou, is intensifying its presence in the West Asian market with this demonstration. The company also showcased other variants from its fleet, including the high-rise firefighting EH126-F and the aerial logistics EH126-L, highlighting the versatile applications of its technology.
