The Chinese acrobatic ballet “Swan Lake,” performed by the Xi’an Acrobatic Troupe, recently enthralled audiences at the Royal Opera House Muscat in Oman. This unique rendition of the classical ballet combined traditional ballet elements with high-energy Chinese acrobatics, including innovative acts like shoulder balancing and aerial rings, making its debut in an Arab country a memorable one.
Artistic Director Zhang Quan emphasised the performance’s role in cultural exchange, blending the “excitement of Chinese acrobatic art with the aesthetic beauty of Western ballet” to create a spectacular fusion that resonated deeply with the audience. This approach not only showcased acrobatic prowess but also aimed to foster a greater appreciation of this hybrid art form internationally.
The show was part of the troupe’s 20th anniversary celebration and featured a “ballet on shoulders” adaptation, marking a first in the ballet’s history. The Xi’an Acrobatic Troupe, known for pioneering this adaptation, has received acclaim for transforming traditional ballet into a visually stunning acrobatic performance.
After their successful shows in Oman, the troupe is scheduled to continue their international tour, with performances planned at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London in June.
