Iran and China have entered a significant phase of cooperation in the agricultural sector, marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) today in Beijing. According to IRNA, the agreement was signed by Iran’s Deputy Agriculture Minister, Kazem Khavazi, and his Chinese counterpart, as part of the 5th Iran-China Joint Economic Cooperation Committee.
This comprehensive MOU covers multiple sectors, including horticulture, agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, and agricultural mechanization. Furthermore, it includes aspects of China’s investment in Iran’s agricultural development programs. The event was attended by Khavazi, who led a delegation to the Chinese capital to finalise these collaborative efforts.
The signing comes on the heels of the Iran-China Business Forum, where Samad Hassanzadeh, head of the Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines, and Agriculture (ICCIMA), highlighted the potential for bilateral trade to reach $50 billion.
Hassanzadeh emphasised the agricultural sector as a key area for boosting economic relations and expressed optimism that the Iran Expo 2024 would further promote ties between Tehran and Beijing.
Currently, China stands as Iran’s primary trading partner, maintaining robust economic relations despite severe US sanctions. The partnership has been further solidified by a 25-year comprehensive cooperation agreement signed in March 2021, underscoring the long-term strategic interests shared between the two nations.
