Zhang Youxia, vice chairman of China’s Central Military Commission, and Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun met separately on Tuesday with Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, marking a significant step in strengthening the strategic defence partnership between the two countries.

Zhang Youxia emphasised the deepening strategic mutual trust between the Chinese and Saudi militaries, highlighting their practical cooperation in areas such as military exchanges, personnel training, and joint exercises. “The Chinese side is open to cooperation with the Saudi military,” Zhang stated, expressing optimism for more fruitful, mutually beneficial collaboration.

Prince Khalid echoed this sentiment, stating Riyadh’s readiness to enhance practical cooperation in various fields. “Saudi Arabia is ready to work with China to enhance practical cooperation between the two militaries,” Khalid affirmed.

Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun reiterated China’s support for Saudi Arabia on issues concerning each other’s core interests, stressing timely communication and coordination on international and regional affairs.

“The two sides communicate and coordinate on international and regional affairs in a timely manner, effectively defending their common interests,” Dong noted. He called for a more pragmatic and sustained cooperation paradigm with higher mutual trust to provide long-term, stable, and reliable strategic support for bilateral relations.

During his official visit, Prince Khalid also met with Zhang Youxia to discuss regional and international developments and exchanged views on issues of common interest.

Saudi Arabia’s Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman was warmly received in Beijing, with a reception held in his honour. The visit included several meetings to review bilateral relations and discuss cooperation in various fields, aiming to strengthen the strategic defence partnership.

China’s role as a mediator in the reconciliation agreement between Saudi Arabia and Iran last year further underscores its commitment to regional peace and stability.
