Japan’s Ambassador to Qatar, Satoshi Maeda, has emphasised Japan’s commitment to working with Qatar on advancing clean energy projects amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. In an interview with The Peninsula, Maeda highlighted Tokyo’s concern for the critical situation in Gaza and its efforts to facilitate a sustainable ceasefire and humanitarian assistance.

Maeda praised Doha’s diplomatic role in mediating between Israel and Hamas, acknowledging the complexity of achieving a ceasefire and the release of prisoners. He underscored the importance of international support in these negotiations and Japan’s active participation in mediation efforts.

Beyond humanitarian aid, Japan and Qatar are focusing on joint clean energy initiatives. Maeda noted Japan’s commitment to sustainable development and clean energy projects, both in Qatar and Japan.

He highlighted the North Field Expansion Project, where Japan’s Chiyoda Corporation is constructing LNG plants equipped with carbon capture and storage facilities, significantly reducing CO2 emissions.

Maeda also pointed to Japan’s ongoing collaborations with Qatar in various sectors, including the development of new technologies for a carbon-neutral society. He mentioned the successful partnership between Sumitomo Corporation and QatarEnergy for the supply of oil well tubing for the Blue Ammonia Plant’s CCS facility.

Furthermore, Japan’s Mitsubishi Research Institute has proposed carbon credit measures to Qatar’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. In collaboration with Kahramaa, Japan’s Institute of Energy Economics has contributed to Qatar’s national energy conservation programme, Tarsheed.

The ambassador highlighted the robust economic and trade relationship between Japan and Qatar, with significant investments in energy, healthcare, education, and technology. Maeda expressed hope for continued diversification and strengthening of bilateral relations, including increased people-to-people exchanges and strategic dialogue in various sectors.

Maeda concluded by reaffirming Japan’s dedication to advancing clean energy projects with Qatar, aiming to enhance mutual growth and sustainability for both countries.
