The Duqm Materials Market, the third venture within the China-Oman Industrial City for light and medium industries, was officially inaugurated on Sunday at the Special Economic Zone in Duqm (SEZD).
Covering 32,000 square metres, the project was developed through a partnership between the Chinese company Wanfang, Al Thabat Holding Company, and Duqm Development Company, with an investment of OMR 7.5 million ($19.4 million).
The market specialises in the sale of building materials, electrical appliances, luxury items, and showcases Chinese cars. It also includes manufacturing workshops, enabling companies to produce goods on-site.
Su Wei, Chairman of Duqm Materials Market Company and Wanfang’s representative, highlighted the project’s role in fostering collaboration between Chinese and Omani businesses, strengthening the partnership between the two countries.
He expressed optimism that the market would extend beyond retail, potentially becoming a hub for manufacturing and exporting, capitalising on Duqm’s strategic location and its port.
The market, one of the largest retail projects in SEZD, aims to attract both local and international companies. Mahmoud bin Salem al Jardani, Business Development Manager at Duqm Development Company, noted that the market’s proximity to Duqm Port, just 10 kilometres away, will facilitate both import and export activities, enhancing its appeal as a business hub.
The opening ceremony was attended by 30 representatives from Chinese companies, reflecting strong interest in the new project and the broader economic potential of the Duqm Special Economic Zone.
